Corticosteroids – Uses and Benefits in Orthopedic Treatments
Corticosteroids are a class of hormones that are naturally produced in the body’s adrenal glands. However, these hormones can also be manufactured in a lab. Both treat a variety of health issues, including orthopedic conditions, like arthritis and inflammation from soft tissue injuries.
There are two types of corticosteroids –
- Glucocorticoids can help to fight inflammation. Cortisol (hydrocortisone) is a naturally-occurring glucocorticoid. Prednisone is a synthetic or human-made glucocorticoid, commonly prescribed for a variety of health issues including asthma and allergies.
- Mineralocorticoids regulate the water and electrolytes balance in the kidneys.
Together, these two groups of corticosteroids can treat many different health conditions, including rheumatological diseases, autoimmune diseases, inflammation from injury, and more.
Orthopedic Uses of Corticosteroids
In orthopedic treatments, corticosteroid injections are used for their anti-inflammatory properties. An orthopedic doctor may suggest one or more corticosteroid injections to the joint or the site of injury to bring down swelling or pain, in case of some painful conditions, like arthritis or a bulging disc.
